The Spirit of Compassionate Motivational Interviewing

26/01/2021

1:30 pm

Introduction To The Course

Running over two half days, this is a skills-based course suitable for people new to Motivational Interviewing (MI) and experienced practitioners who want to understand the compassionate update to MI and to refresh their skills.

Motivational Interviewing is a potent, evidence-based approach for working with people with troubling behaviour who do not yet see the need for change.

Whilst around since the early 1980s, the approach was updated in 2013 in line with the current thinking in wellbeing approaches underpinning this programme. A key change was adding Compassion as the new component in the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.

It is a skills-based course – you will go away with a compassionate way of being with people who seem stuck.

This course will be delivered online by a live trainer. To help attendees get the most from our online training this course will be delivered over two sessions:
Tues 26th Jan 2021, 13.30-16.30 and Weds 27th Jan 2021, 13.30-16.30

How can Waypoint help me?

Speak To Us
It is clear that your training often relates to psychological distress and/or troubling behaviour. How do you respond if things come up that I might find difficult?

We are attentive to what’s going on for our learners and always encourage them to be up front with us about what they need. We model what we teach so you can expect a compassionate, collaborative and safe response from us. This is tailored to the person so varies widely.

We would offer ongoing emotional support as suited to your progression with us on a course, whether it’s specific learning needs, confidence, motivation or anxiety and would help you access additional support if needed. You are always welcome to contact us in advance if you want to discuss your particular needs. We will always try to flag up if a section of a course might be more upsetting for some people.

Can my service users come on your training courses?

We offer a range of courses relating to personal development and actively encourage a diversity of experiences. Often people who use services want to see what it’s like “from the inside” and are interested to understand a little more formally what the various approaches might have been that they experienced while accessing a service so we’d encourage that (again, if suitable for the individual).

Sometimes, it can be a little unsettling for staff to have people who use services on the same training as them and we make it clear is a course might not be suitable for a given individual. The best thing to do is talk to us if you’re considering this.

Can my clients claim the costs of training if they are on benefits?

Occasionally we get funding to cover costs so it’s worth keeping an eye out on our website. Generally, we are unable to source costs for individuals. They might be able to claim expenses from your own organisation of course.

Will I get a certificate?

Oh, yes. We send out attendance certificates at the end of the course. If it’s an accredited course, you’ll get a fancy certificate (or two!) from the Awarding Body.

Is the training accredited?

Several courses are accredited – see the Accredited Courses section for details.

Will I have to disclose stuff?

You will never have to disclose anything you do not wish to disclose and we will ensure no pressure is put on you to do so. A key way we learn, however, is to draw on our own experiences and all our courses will ask you to think about how you make sense of some ideas or ways of behaving that we’ve been discussing.

You’ll be invited to share your thoughts sometimes in pairs or small groups and we often have whole group discussions where, again, you would be welcome to explore your ideas. We know that training can be a bit scary sometimes and we do our utmost to get the level of challenge just right for everyone. This means we might have different approaches with different people on different occasions.

Can I use it towards my CPD hours?
We will give you information about how many hours study has been involved. We are not allied to any particular professional organisation for CPD.
I have a specific learning need. Can I still access this training?
Get in touch and tell us what works best for you. We will do everything we reasonably can to make the training as accessible to you as it is to anyone else.
Do you provide course materials?
In our attempts to save the planet, we try to minimise our use of paper so we make materials available electronically when we can. Also, it’s a great idea not to spend all your time with us taking notes so we tend not to give PowerPoint handouts until after the event. If you need them beforehand, just let us know.
What are the start and finish times of Waypoint courses?
Generally, 10 am to 4.30 pm. Half days are typically 10am to 1pm or 1.30am to 4.30pm. If we’re doing some specific training for an organisation, we go with what they are wanting.
Am I eligible to undertake these courses?
Probably. Get in touch if you have any concerns or queries.
Is this training suitable for beginners?
It depends. Some courses say clearly that they have particular prior learning requirements. For example, most skills-based courses will require you to have good counselling skills. Apart from our introductory counselling skills courses!
Is this training suitable for advanced practitioners?
Some courses build on firmly established skills, knowledge and/or attitudes. This is clearly indicated in the relevant course descriptions.
Can you deliver training outside of the UK?

Only in the Caribbean or New Zealand. (Just kidding!) Give us a call and we’d love to work out what’s best. Online courses can generally be easily accessed from abroad.

Where does the training take place?
We’re based in Yorkshire but travel all over the country.
Is there any preparation I need to do before coming?
If there’s anything specific, it’s mentioned in the particular course description. We’ll make this clear when confirming your place. Some courses do require prior learning too.
How many people on the course?

For skills-based course, we keep the ratio of 12 learners to one trainer. We often train larger groups with a suitable number of trainers. If it’s not a skills-based course, we tend to limit it to 20 but training can be very successful with very large groups and so we adjust the learning activities to suit the size of the group.
