Trauma Informed Practice

17/01/22 and 24/01/22

This course explores the various factors that can contribute to trauma and it’s impacts on individuals, communities and organisations.

  • To gain an understanding of the principles of Trauma Informed Practice 
  • To deepen awareness and build confidence in working with and supporting those who have or are experiencing trauma 
  • To promote self-care in the context of trauma work

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a potent, evidence-based approach for working with people with troubling behaviour who do not yet see the need for change.

This is a skills-based course suitable for people new to Motivational Interviewing (MI) and experienced practitioners who want to understand the compassionate update to MI and to refresh their skills.

Training aims:

  • Gain an understanding of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing 
  • Explain the difference between sympathy, empathy and compassion 
  • Practise skills for eliciting change talk
  • Know when Motivational Interviewing is useful and when not

Solution Focussed Practice

26/04/22 and 27/09/22

This is a skills-based course inviting you to practise using a range of solution focused techniques to engage quickly and effectively with people facing multiple-disadvantages

Training aims:

  • Identify key assumptions of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  • Identify instances of “what’s working”
  • Practise using some key SF techniques: Best Hopes; Preferred Future; Miracle Question; Scaling
  • Compare SF approaches with the way you currently work

Relapse Prevention

24/05/22 and 08/11/22

This course looks at a range of ways of understanding how people lapse and relapse back to problematic behaviour after making a successful change.

Training aims:

  • Outline Marlatt’s Model of Relapse Prevention and how it has evolved.
  • Evaluate different models explaining lapse and relapse
  • Discuss the claim that how the way we think about relapse changes our behaviour
  • Discuss the role of mindfulness-based interventions in preventing relapse
  • Practice ways of responding to lapse or relapse
  • Discuss ways of preventing lapse turning to relapse
